Welcome

The Kyoto International School caters for students as young as three years old.  The elementary school is through to Grade 5, and is followed by the Pegasus Program which provides enriched learning experiences in and out of the classroom for the older students.  KIS has been providing an international education in Kyoto since 1957. In 2007 we became an IB World School offering the International Baccalaureate Organization Primary Years Program. Come visit us, to see how the PYP is carried out in our classrooms. You may also visit the PYP IBO web site for an in-depth explanation of its philosophy.

Early Childhood
Our Early Childhood classes provide a warm and welcoming environment where children learn through play and through guided inquiry. All students in Preschool - Kindergarten learn within the framework of the PYP curriculum.

Elementary School
The low teacher- student ratio ensures children are well supported. Along with core subjects areas which are mostly integrated through six PYP units of inquiry at each grade level, Elementary students have daily Japanese classes and weekly music and art lessons. Grade 5 students are required to engage in a collaborative, transdisciplinary inquiry that sees them identifying, investigating and offering solutions to real-life issues or problems. This is referred to as the PYP Exhibition Unit.

Middle School & High School
Once students move into our Middle School, their study involves much more 'out in the field' learning to complement and enhance the rigorous learning found within the classroom. Such learning has involved study trips to Mongolia to live with Nomads, to Okinawa to absorb more about history and culture, to Hiroshima to learn directly from survivors about the effects of war, to New Zealand to observe first hand the unique ecosystem of the fiords and the surrounding rainforest, to Aomori to hear directly from scientists working on energy projects, and they have jumped in the ocean to explore the northernmost reef in the world at Kushimoto while engaging in primary research with trained marine biologists. KIS is extending into a High School so please contact us to learn more.

After School Activity Program (3:30pm - 6pm daily)
KIS (ASAP) offers KIS students various on-campus activities, exciting adventures within walking distance of the campus and fun playing with friends each afternoon. Working-parents in particular are helped by this new program.

English Language School
KIS also runs an after-school English Language School with classes suitable for those new to English, bi-cultural children, or students who have lived abroad.
